I invested and saved money for 30 days — This is what I learned from it.
How I managed to invest 52% of my paycheck.
I started the daily investing challenge 37 days ago to minimize the friction of investing. Doing it every day using $5 was way easier on my pocket than waiting for my paycheck and taking huge 10%-20% cuts.
The goal was to invest some, save some. Meaning I wasn't allowed to go to bed without moving some cash to my emergency fund and some to one of my investment vehicles (Crypto or Stock account).
I live in a third-world country, so the amounts I am about to share maybe don't look like a lot to you, but for a person that made $450 last month. I do think it's impressive.
Between saving and investments, I managed to allocate $238. With an average of $2 saved and 5$ invested.
Yeah, I know you might be thinking. He made $450, invested $238. How the heck did he managed to live with $212?
In my first post where I explained why I started investing every day I stated that by doing it, it put a chip on my shoulder where I was thinking about money every single day and how would I make it to my next investment.
Oh boy. This is what I had to do:
- Sold 1 pair of shoes +$30
- Sold an unused boxing bag +$70
- Baked some brownies and sold them at my job. +$20
- Went to the grocery store with a calculator and only bought the necessary.
Mentally it is really though
Looking at your bank account going to zero and still taking out every single penny without knowing how you will get more gave me huge anxiety and even got me crying a few times.
You never know how strong you are, until being strong is the only choice you have.
Going through those difficult days made me realize that I was spending way more than what I needed, I owe way too much stuff that I didn’t use and I was not being focused enough on the financial part of my life.
Conclusion
I highly suggest you try this, even if it is only for 30 days. It forces you to learn so much about yourself, about your weakness and strengths.
I realize that in hard times we get extremely creative on how to make money and get more conscious of how and where we spend our earned cash.
